ATEX 137 requires that only certain categories of Group II ATEX certified equipment can be used in specific Zones. This requirement guides manufacturers on which Category of ATEX certification their product(s) need. The Zones and their applicable equipment Categories are as follows: Zones 0 & 20 require Category 1 equipment only The ATEX directive 94/9/EC stipulates a type examination for explosion‐proof electrical devices of categories 1 and 2. The manufacturer must provide all technical documents required for the test, and ATEX. There are two EU Directives ATEX 95 (94/9/EC) and ATEX 137 (1999/92/EC) concerning, respectively, the supply and the use of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres. The term ‘ATEX’ is an acronym, derived from the French title of the 94/9/EC Directive.
