Bas Jan Ader was born 19th April 1942, to Bastiaan Ader and Johanna Ader-Appels. He was born in Winschoten, Netherlands, and his parents were both ministers of the Calvinist church, which was a break-away from the Catholic church. Ader was only two when his father was killed by the Nazis because he helped Jewish people escape the Holocaust. Bas Jan Ader’s disappearance at sea cemented the legend of this most self-negating of artists. Bas Jan Ader’s piece Untitled (Swedish Fall), 1971, is two colour photographs set beside each other, both showing a pine forest.

Bas Jan Ader was born in 1942 in a remote area in the northeastern part of the Netherlands near the German border. His father was a minister in the Dutch Reform Church and both of his parents were Cult Epics and AgitPop Media proudly present “ Here Is Always Somewhere Else,” the critically acclaimed documentary about enigmatic Dutch/Californian artist Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975), whose daring conceptual performances culminated in his mysterious disappearance at sea. Bas Jan Serafina Steer, who is normally known as a harpist, started learning the bass guitar and writing with performance artist Jenny Moore in 2015. They recruited Sarah Anderson, and the trio became Bas Jan - named after the Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader who was last seen setting out to sail across the Atlantic in 1975.
